So here it is. The year is over today. I know I have been a horrible blogger. A really really horrible blogger. What can I say, work and school together are hard. But you know, even though I've been mostly disconnected from my social life and been under a lot of stress, I've actually had an amazing 2010. I am truly thankful for this year. It has brought me back to myself and on my road. I hope you have had the same amazing year. If not, just think, tomorrow is a new year! Full of possibilities.

I dont know what 2011 has in store for me. I'm starting a new chapter in my life and I don't even want to use my crystal ball to see it. Good or bad things will happen and I will have to face them. We all will. That's what's so great, we get a chance to fight.

On the 14th I'll be packing my bags and moving to Russia for 3 months. I think I'll start a blog just for Russia, hopefully I'll be able to be better at that one!

After that, who knows! But I cant wait to find out...

I really don't feel like re-arranging snow-globes on a page anymore. I've noticed that I really really hate re-arranging snow-globes on pages, As well as any other kind of souvenir crap. Thankfully, the year is ending and I won't be doing any of that next year.

I've decided to post the October pictures at the end of the week. I swear, I'm trying. Things aren't as unmanageable now, as they have been for the last couple of months. Hopefully I'll be able to write more as time goes by.

Now, if you guys haven't been watching, Boardwalk Empire on HBO is really kick ass.

I suggest you get on that ASAP. I know what you may be thinking, who needs a new show? especially about mobsters.. BUT it is really really really that good. If not for the storyline, then Michael Pitt is definitely something to look at and so is Paz de La Huerta (well, only from the neck down, which is good cos she's always naked). Also, the costumes and set design are delicious. They really did pay attention to every last detail for this show. Hell, the title sequence is pretty good as well.

Just think this: True Blood is gone until next year and Spartacus has yet to show signs of life...

Also, The Walking Dead starts Halloween weekend... EXCITING!!!! OH and in case you want some cool pictures to look at in general, I keep a tumblr blog which is easier to maintain than blogger. check me out! Time's a Wastin'

I know I was supposed to keep up the chronicling the month of October. But, because of the review, I kind of got side tracked. I know it was supposed to be "scary" buuut, I want to continue oct, and since I did not see anything scary while I had my camera on me, I'll show you a bit of my Tampa wedding weekend. Hey, it was in october! I think I'm just going to take the pics and then post them at the end of each week...

Anyhow, Tampa was a welcome break. Sort of. The driving made it a bit, meh. But, still, changing the scenery was a welcome change. The weather was fabulous, although it was quite cold at night. Over all, it was a really nice time.

There's nothing creepier than suburbia, I'll tell you that.

Rocky Horror is going to be showing on the 30th at the Gusman, and on the 31st at Ft. Lauderdale. Needless to say it is one of our favorite musicals. The casting was unbelievable. Any way, we spent the day singing to the songs. It was awesome. If we do go, at least I'll put my Columbia costume to good use. Well, half of it -because those shorts SUCK.

I know I haven't been writing much.. I am sort of being lazy and just posting on to tumblr -they make it so easy!

Anyway, I'm planning to give myself a little project for the month of October. Nothing crazy. I plan to take scary/Halloween themed pics for the month of October. Kind of looking for the spooky/atmospheric in everyday things. Hopefully it will work out. Baby steps! lol. Starts Friday!

Finally, the quarter is over and I took my token "by myself week" to re-coup. Although, this break isn't really a break since I'm going to be busy working on my school issued portfolio site. I have to have it in order by the first or second week of October so that I can be eligible for quarter away (kind of a study abroad thing). Sigh, but enough about business.

I managed to go to an old friend's wedding this weekend and man, it was so fun. It was really really great. Although it was tinged with a great deal of sadness because her mother had just passed, but it went off like she would have wanted so.. Anyway...

This Halloween is going to be all about Dia de Los Muertos for me (even though it is actually the two days after Halloween, but still, it's my theme). I am also making sugar skulls! I finally received the molds in the mail.

wooo! I'm super excited. I'm even going to paint my face like a skull for Halloween! sigh. I think I'm a bit, too excited about this. I've still got a long way to go before I can relax from school, but seriously this is just so exciting. I had to go to party city to get some stuff for a class, and they are already taking out their Halloween stuff. It's getting to be that time of the year. FABULOUS!

I understand many people are upset by this season's Don Draper. Everyone expected the same character as seasons past. But I see what Weiner is going for here and I have to say I like it. We're so used to our lead/awesome characters being well, awesome, all the damn time. But if it is one thing Mad Men is known for is gritty character development. Realistically speaking, what happened to the character of Don Draper at the end of last season, was NOT A FUN TIME and the result, is what we're seeing now. I also get the feeling that we're seeing TV character Karma in full effect. Action/Reaction. So he's shaken and not so confident, so he's on a self destructive spiral, so what. That shit happens. It's happening to Don Draper. And the embarrassment I felt for him last night watching him try to hit on that girl was freakin'gold. If the goal was to elicit emotions and empathize with the character, they did a good job.

So there. Stop the hate.

Summer On South Beach

Hung out for a little while on South Beach on Saturday. Nothing really, just shooting some buildings for a Deco Poster I'm supposed to be working on. It was an inspiration assignment. This weekend felt odd. Like I chose to not do much, which rubbed a few people the wrong way -since I'm supposed to "never stop". Get a life.

I stopped wearing watches a very long time ago. I think it was a combination of things. The battery ran out and I was lazy, I didn't appreciate watch tan lines, I have a cell phone.. The list goes on. However, I was perusing a magazine the other day and fell in love.

This week is shaping up so much better than the last. I'm definitely less stressed out. I've actually been able to just sit back and watch really great stuff -despite seeing SALT.

I finally saw VOLVER.

I don't know why I hadn't seen it before. It was really great, really really great. You know, I think I can get lost more in Penelope Cruz's acting when she does it in Spanish. It makes her not so exotic and easier to understand... which makes me stop my hateration.

I also saw A Single Man, by Tom Ford.

Just the fact that Tom Ford was involved (he directed), and that it starred Colin Firth was enough. But you know it was really really really really awesome. It's sad, what I like to call Mad Men sad. Which means it's sad but good and kind of makes you think. I totally recommend it to anyone and everyone. Yes, it is about a gay man "technically" but the film does suuuch a good job of transcending sexual orientation, to make it about the actual relationship,and loss (in general) that it just speaks to the person. You know? Mr. Ford did an awesome job. And THE CLOTHING, and THE SETS! and THE FILM TEMPERATURE. It is totally a work of art. Like FOR REAL. WATCH IT.

Next up on my list is The House of the Devil.

It was made last year and is supposedly a throwback to the 60's and 70's type of horror films. Think, Rosemary's Baby. I found the info on Tumblr and was totally intrigued, so, I must watch!

In unfortunate news, I hate to inform that there will be a Paranormal Activity 2. Yes. Sucks. I hate it when they do this. A really really great low budget film comes along that makes it big and suddenly Hollywood is on the bandwagon to ruin it by making tons of sequels. This new one involves a young family (from what I can gather) with a dog and a baby. Whatever. I don't think I'll watch this.

I've managed to not kill the plants I planted this spring! The Lavender is blooming, the mint is healthier, the basil is robust and the sage is strong! I am feeling quite accomplished. If only my lemon balm would stop being so sluggish...

I'm back from my mountain escapade! It was fantastic! I loved it so much that as soon as I make enough money for a summer house I want to have one there, or in some rural forested area. The weather was lovely, the air was different, there were animals everywhere and people were actually -NICE. It really puts things in perspective when you can slow down the frantic pace. I also saw fireflies for the first time!! Mesmerizing! I took tons of pictures, but only managed to edit four since we got in at 7am Tuesday, and I had class at 9am. We drove 14 hours, I did not rest. I havent really been able to rest tho, since I started the crazy Hero's quarter at school. It's crazy but it's been greaaat! My team won the class challenge! wooo!! not bad for concepting/researching/comping in two days. This quarter I will be burning the candle at both ends, but it's gonna be gooooood!!

I got myself lightroom 3! wooo! I had my doubts (I mean, what's better than photoshop?) But man was I wrong! While photoshop is an amazing tool, lightroom is all pictures, all the time. Editing/Processing is so fantastic! I love it! I don't think I'll ever go back to process in photoshop again! Awesome!

I got my Lumix and it's fabulous, but it's got so much stuff going on it's going to take me a bit. I do like that you can completely customize it. It also has a bunch of settings like, "baby, pinhole etc".

I also got my school schedule, and just found out I have a class that meets twice instead of once. Which, while not a change to my current schedule, I kind of expected to make a little more money by working a few more hours.. Man, I gotta finalize that loan, for real.

I'm also trying to see if I can pick up my 365 or something like it, and by something like it I mean something more "less committed" like maybe Pink Tuesdays.. who knows. But I do want to take more pictures, I loove this camera.

Were also going to be driving up to North Carolina for the 4th. Road Triiip!

More Summer Fun!

Well, not so much fun, as keeping busy. I decided to make use of stuff I had laying around. And viola! jewelry! Note on the earrings, I am aware the leaves are different shades of green, I was thinking of making them match, but then one broke, I may just swap the dark green one for the blue green and make them match, but I dunno, I kind of like it mismatched.. Anyway, I feel mentally energized which is good for the coming quarter -unlike last quarter which was just the worst for me... I cant wait to see what happens...

Summer Reading

I had this book in my collection for a few months and have only picked it up when I truly have time to have what I read sink in. It is that amazing. I don't want to waste any bit of it with A.D.D / life noise nonsense.

It is obvious why it has inspired so many through time. I really really want to finish it and get something out of it. Everything makes so much sense and is so beautifully written, like the translator says, "this is an instance where our limited words fail". It it a gorgeous example of how interconnected world religions are, but choose to not be. This reminds me of a little video a friend of mine linked me to today. Check it out, you'll like it.

I've finally had some time to de-compress from the quarter/work combo. For the first time in a while I am not feeling so anxious. However, I am a neurotic individual, so I will soon find something to be apprehensive about (or the lack of it). I also splurged and got myself a camera I couldn't afford. It's a Lumix! Mostly I'm digging it because of the Leica Connections and because it's the best compact camera around (supposedly, and debatable I'm sure)..

But hey, at least I'll take more pics, since I wont have to lug around the 40D anymore. Hopefully I'll have pictures to show by next posting (I got the expedited shipping). Anyway, I hope you're having a great summer so far! :P!

Peter Steele from Type O Negative passed away yesterday. He was 48 - I think. People think it was heart failure (although, heart failure is a reaction to something, and it results in death. But that's just my Honors Biology teacher I'm channeling..). I was lucky enough to go see them when they came to town a few years ago, and they were awesome. They are an acquired taste for some, but one thing that is absolutely true is that this guy's voice (Peter) was amazing. This is a sad day for Goth Metal chicks everywhere. I would drink some Jägermeister in his honor today if it didn't get me sick every time I drank it...

Also, Love You to Death is one of the best songs everrrrrrr...

Spring is here! So I got this for summer.. Not one to buy swimsuits (I rarely go to the beach/pool -skin cancer phobia and slightly body dysmorphic-ish). But I couldn't resist.

However, this really intrigued me because it is a wacom tablet technique tutorial mixed with other photoshop foolin' around and resources. Definitely worth checking out. I managed to get a sweet deal on the price because I subscribe to GoMedia (they have great free vector packs every now and again). That's something else I wanted to get into. I really don't use my wacom. I need to get on that...

10 Things: A Blogger's Game

Woo hoo! I got tagged by my friend and fellow blogger Nadia of Little Me Big You in the 10 things sensation! The object of this is to write 10 things that make you happy or inspire you. So here we go!

1. Music! You want a reflection of my current mood? Check my current playlist. It will ALWAYS tell you the truth, even when I do not. I really cannot see myself ever "not listening". Especially in a car. I would shoot myself.

2. Cool Old People: Especially happy cool old people. There is nothing that gives me more hope in my future than seeing old people who's lives are full of love and things going on. It's like, "it can be done, so here I go".

3. Family: This is, above all else makes me happy. I love them. All of them. Even when they annoy me, and they do that often.

4. Masks! They rock. Especially animal masks and old-timey halloween masks.I have a bunch of them. I have a Dracula one I got from a curiosity/costume shop in the West Village a while back. It's kind of flimsy, but you don't find those just anywhere. I don't have room for them though, so they kind of wander around. Eventually, I want to hang them up. You know, like how hunters hang up their "trophies", and some smart ass will say, "hey, so...you killed a dracula did you?" and I will reply "I have many skills".

5. Drinks with Good Friends: I am not a big drinker, even though I always say "I need drinks".But I do appreciate having a good drink with a good friend(s). That is always, always fun.

6. Food! Seriously.

7. Books. They keep me entertained, I like their covers and I like to read. This is actually a book I just got! It's about how "white" as a race is relatively new in the scheme of things, and is really just an excuse to keep people down. ehem, the cover reads "a mind expanding and myth destroying exploration of notions of white race. Not merely a skin color but also a signal of power, prestige and beauty to be withheld and granted selectively".

8. Prints/Paintings. I still have a few put away because of space constraints...

9. Art Supply/ Craft Stores, I'm like a kid in a candy store. I see possibilities everywhere!

10. Doing Nothing (especially with Juan). :)

Projects

I am officially starting my "downtime" projects. I have a few. Anywho, these include:
Making my own Matryoshka doll. I ordered these online last week, and hope to get my hands on them towards Wednesday. I'm tres excited!

I was thinking of painting them as Latin or tropical looking women. But not in a cheesy way. Here's what they normally look like (in case you don't know).

I'm seriously excited about this project. I remember my grandmother had a Matryoshka when I was reaaally little and I loved it. I wonder what she did with it? My other project is screen printing myself a Led Zeppelin T-shirt. I already have the graphic, now I just need to go and print the transparency somewhere. Here's what I want:

It's not a lot, and I did mock up something with a little more "flair". But I think I should take baby steps for now. Especially since this would be my first time screen printing. And for my third and fourth projects, I'm starting my AFX tutorials again today, and hitting the gym starting tomorrow. Last week was my "taking a break week" now, I gotta moove.

Keep it Clean, Mac Users

"macs never get sick" is the usual mantra out there. This is, by and large TRUE. However, many people think you can just go go go with the mac and that is it. Sure, Mac owners are more careful with Macs because they just shelled out a crap load of money for it. But DO YOU MAKE SURE that when you uninstall ALL the files are deleted? even the hidden ones? Do you make sure your Macs permissions are in order? your temp files too??? You know, the basic maintenance no one thinks of doing on a mac because they are "indestructible" or so the commercial tells you? IN CASE YOU DON'T, check these little apps out:

Cocktail is a basic System maintenance interface that lets you do all the stuff to keep your mac running nice and clean and app cleaner is for removing apps. Just drag the program you want gone and it will get all the files associated with it in a nice box for you to stick in the trash. Cocktail is a free trial (until the 10th launch) and App Cleaner is free. Click the pics to be redirected.

I use InDesign CS4 for everything at work. You can imagine my frustration when my 70 something page document kept shutting the program down when I tried to export. I was freaked out. Until I derrr realized THIS MORNING my export setting was not for Adobe's newest reader. It was set for 3 or some shit. So then, It hit me OOOH more of adobe's "if you dont get the newer version of our things, then you will never work in this town again" policy -only for reader. Thankfully, reader is free. A whole day and night of frustration, of re-installing my program and trying to clean up my computer when all I had to do was click. Sigh. :(

So, Friday was my birthday. It was great, the whole weekend. EXCEPT, for that I had to go to the dentist and I had a cleaning. I hadn't been to the hygienist for like -ever- years even. And NOW I have to be on a treatment for a week to get my teeth/gums clean like they are supposed to be.. :( So far so good though. The only drawback is that the mouthwash I am on makes things taste strange... Never again will I miss an appointment. Never again.. :(

And you know what that means! another soon to be failed attempt at actually growing plants. Yes, every year there is a massacre of plants in my yard. every year. I've tried to curb my impulses at home depot, especially since I am broke. BUT I do have some left over seeds from my last massacre, soooooo.... I'll keep you posted..

Yesterday we decided to go to the Miccosukee reservation at Big Cypress and check out the Seminole War reenactment. We got there too late and missed the shootout, but got to see lots of traditional dancing. Here is a small video I took yesterday and worked on for a little while. It is of my favorite dancer, Whitehorse, doing the War Dance. I wanted it to look old, and I want to make it into something I can turn in to Video class, but we'll see what happens. So, you know, I usually keep quiet about stuff I see that is kind of out of whack. However, I really couldn't this time. I don't have an issue with super skinny models, I could care less. I know they really are just hangers, objects for designers to display their wares on and have nothing to do with me. I love fashion, so I give it a free pass. HOWEVER –this. is. just. too much. Please make note of the model below. Click the picture to get a bigger image if you must. Now, look at her waist. Please do. It kind of looks like maybe a stripe of her bathing suit, but alas, no. Today Alexander McQueen was found dead in his apartment. He committed suicide. You know, I really could give a fig about celebrity deaths. I mean, death is the name of the game isn't it? were all moving towards it every day. But the thing is, this guy was actually a real artist. Like, for real. He could bring worlds to life through costume. As a highly visual person this impacts me more than say, Michael Jackson dying. You can hear his music all over the place. But visual things are in a way, more finite? I don't know. All I know is that this makes me sad. Very sad for the first time in a long while.

The day sports fans have been waiting for has come and gone, along with it's advertising. I have to say, I was quite disappointed. No I did not watch the game. I don't "do" sports -unless it's the world cup. I am glad the saints won though. Anyway, all the ads are online, and I have -unfortunately- watched them. Nothing genuinely funny or fun, nothing groundbreaking, nothing provocative. Just a bunch of man children complaining that they had to grow up. Bitch bitch bitch, whine whine whine, take back your spine/pants -BULLSHIT. Seriously, are male advertising creatives that disgruntled at having to grow up or having to deal with women that they WASTED THE BEST PRIME TIME SPOT OF THE YEAR bitching about stupid shit instead of pushing the envelope? gah. If shit like this keeps happening, I'm going to have to take the route pepsi did this year and totally even forgo the commercials next year... sheeesshhh....

Every time I find a site I like, I right click to find more or less what they are using (namely, Flash or not). Today I came across a really cute site that does not use flash. It looks like an animated gif, but I'm not quite sure. I need to confer with a fellow conspirator about that. But still! and not just is it super cute, but the products -I'm a sucker for pretty. Anyway, I just needed to make a little note of it for myself.. The site is for ginkopapers. Their logo is super cute too..
